Sussex Skyhawks 6 Wooster Tornadoes 4

July 10, 2009
Friday night
with Bart, Erik, and Marc
Augusta, NJ

After a terrible dinner at a terrible 50's wannabe diner, we made our way to some Can-Am League action. Hell yes!

Time to cleanse the palate after the disappointing dinner.

Night falls on August, NJ

The Skyhawks were cruising to victory. They had a 5-0 lead after 7. But a rousing Wooster comeback made it a nailbiter.

The night was a relaxed one. The joke of the night - lots and lots of Mike Hunt jokes based on a player in the game, Jeremy Hunt. Good ol' Erik.

There were some interesting between innings hijinks as well. There was a water chugging contest which was a new one to me. The Party Marty of Augusta didn't quite know how to pronounce one contestant's name to our great amusement. The kids' name? Caleb. His first attempt came out as Cal (as in Cal Ripken)-eb. He knew that was wrong so he corrected it by pronouncing it Cah-leb. Is Caleb really that unusual a name? Apparently in August, NJ it is.

At one point, Marc overheard kids teasing each other and commented how glad he was to be an adult because kids are so mean. I love going to baseball games and learning things about my friend's traumatic childhoods.

Speaking of kids --

Augusta - home of the kid mohawk.

And the kid mohawk meets a tail combo. Yikes.

In the 8th, a swarm of teens (no mohawks though) sat right behind us so we were privy to some good 'ol Augusta gossip.

An example:
That's not wearing the pants. That's being a bitch. Break up with her.

I'm working on it.

What? It only takes 2 seconds!

The one negative of the night - the PA was the loudest I've heard at any ballpark in recent memory.

Apparently, Augusta used to or currently still does have a lot of farms. The ballpark looks like a barn from the outside. And the players walk to their locker rooms after the game to another building that looks like a barn.

Fireworks night

They actually were kind of the most amazing fireworks I've ever seen. Independent league baseball is awesome!

Check here for more pictures from the first two days of the trip.
