Nats 6 Mets 2

April 8, 2011

Another bitterly cold Opening Day for me. But that's fine. I don't care how cold it is, I like going when I get the chance. This was my first time Opening Day in three years. And it wasn't nearly as cold as that Sunday night game in Baltimore seven years ago. That was cold.

It was nice to know that the Mets' staff were in midseason form. A persnickety usher asked me to present my ticket to him 30 minutes before the game in the upper deck. What? Lame.

I also was trying to buy tickets for a future game but the ticket office wasn't open upstairs. I guess they've already given up on selling advance tickets on Opening Day. The Mets really are a Cracker Jack operation.

But who cares? I can at least be optimistic for a few minutes before the first pitch.

I love the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day! David Wright!

What is this? Yankee Stadium 2001? It's not like Osama bin Laden had been killed yet or anything.

Once again - the Mets brought out all the stops for the big event - Michael Amante!!!!!!! And he totally was rocking the white pants. 6 weeks before Memorial Day, no less!

He was good but he has definitely lost something from this glorious rendition a few years back. And who can get this sight out of one's head? Some things you just can't unsee.

On another note, I loved this guy's attire.

First pitch. RA Dickey delivered the goods.
Unfortunately, he wasn't so good on the day. He only lasted five innings. Apparently, he cracked a fingernail in the 1st inning which led to him not being able to control his knuckleball. I wonder what his excuse has been in the subsequent month of crapitude. On the day, the Mets pitchers walked 9 batters.

It might have only been 42 degrees and rainy but this toy rabbit had fun. I brought him as part of a school project. He's no Doala but he'll do.

Other things of note:
1. SHR and I decided that we wouldn't be opposed to Beltran coming back in 2012 if he agrees to two things in a new contract - choose a new intro song to his at-bats and (more importantly) have his mole removed.

2. SHR had the quote of the day about Jayson Werth's behemoth new contract with the Nats, "Apparently no one in Washington manages money well."

3. The woman behind us who keep calling out ,"I love DICKey" somehow managed to become more and more annoying with each utterance.

4. The homophobic slurs directed at Jayson Werth at one point led me to secretly root for him to hit a three run home run to get the jerk to shut up.

Met killer Willie Harris has finally joined up with the good guys. What a badass!

Taking the rough with the smooch: The two sides of Wee Willie Harris.

The Mets are #11!

We left early. As did countless others. The announced sold out figure of 42,000 also seemed quite inflated.

A sad, empty stadium. The first of many to come this season I'm sure.
